Brazil 2014: Tourists spend €108.5m in Manaus; €229.6m collected in taxes

119,925 tourists descended on Manaus (the capital of the state of Amazonas) for the four group stage fixtures of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil (12/06 to 13/07/2014). They spent 325.8m reais (approximately €108.5m) in the local economy, the Brazilian government said on 15/07/2014.

4.37bn reais (€1.45bn) in taxes were collected from January to June 2014, which is 19.52% more than the 3.66bn reais (€1.22bn) collected from January to June 2013, according to the state financial secretary for Amazonas. 689.15m reais (€229.65m) were collected just for the month of June 2014, a 6.19% increase compared to June 2013 (648.99m reais, or €216.2m).

Foreign tourists, who spent on average six and a half days in Manaus, came for the most part from England and the United States. As for the Brazilian tourists, the majority came from the states of Sao Paulo and Parà, and spent on average 5.4 days in Manaus.
