Release of internationals: Spanish clubs refuse to release South American players

"Clubs have agreed to communicate to their players called up by CONMEBOL nations that they will not be permitted to travel and join up for international duty until the situation and current impasse is resolved," announced LaLiga, following a meeting with the concerned clubs on 26/08/2021.

"LaLiga met this morning (26/08/2021) with the clubs affected by FIFA's two-day extension of the CONMEBOL international match calendar in both September and October 2021, a move in clear detriment to the integrity of LaLiga and its competition," explained the Spanish professional football league

This directly affects 28 South American players from 13 different Spanish clubs and 8 of the 10 countries belonging to the South American Confederation (see list below).

"FIFA has decided to extend the September and October 2021 international periods by 2 days to allow CONMEBOL to schedule 3 matches instead of 2," said World Leagues Forum on 13/08/2021.
