Argentine striker Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona will pay the Spanish treasury €56.4m, the Catalan daily La Vanguardia reported on 17/07/2014.

This includes €12m based on his income in 2013 and €44.4m to resolve his tax debts for 2007 to 2012, including €3m in fines for undeclared income from 2007 to 2009.

Spanish authorities accused Messi of not having declared his income from image rights, which was €10m for 2007-2009, and thus means a shortfall of €5.1m for the government. The player submitted a supplementary statement on his income accompanied by a payment of €10m, La Vanguardia reported on 24/06/2013.

  • Since 2007, Lionel Messi has paid more than €100m to the Spanish tax authorities for income estimated at €200m for the period.
