World Cup: "A unique event that can't be turned into a commonplace event" (World Leagues Forum)

The World Leagues Forum has announced that it is against the idea of a World Cup every two years. "The association representing professional leagues at world level, will oppose any proposals to hold the football World Cup every two years and dilute the historical and traditional values of a competition that means so much to fans and players. The World Cup is a symbolic and unique sporting event. FIFA's leadership cannot be able to turn something exceptional into a commonplace event purely to serve their short-term interests," said the body, in Zurich (SUI) on 08/09/2021.

"The big idea, initially, is to group the qualifying matches into two international windows, in October and March, and then at the end of the season to offer a World Cup and Confederation championships (the Euro for UEFA, AFCON in Africa, the Copa America in South America etc.) every two years," explained Arsène Wenger (FRA), chief of global football development at FIFA, to the French sports daily L'Équipe, on 03/09/2021.
