Spain: 194 players say they're owed €22.8m by 18 clubs; figures contested by Spanish LFP

194 players are demanding €22.839m in outstanding payments from 18 Liga BBVA (Spanish first division) and Liga Adelante (Spanish second division) clubs for the 2013-14 season, the AFE (Association of Spanish Footballers) said on 16/07/2014. Although the number of clubs involved in payment delays is down from the previous year (down 25%; 24 clubs were concerned in 2013), the number of players involved is up (+21.25%; 160 players in 2013). The total outstanding amount is similar (it was €22.836m in 2013), all according to the AFE's figures.

The clubs have until 31/07/2014 at midnight to make these outstanding payments the AFE said. If there are still unpaid players after this deadline, the clubs could face financial and administrative sanctions that could go as far as relegation, according to the article 192.3 of the RFEF (Royal Spanish Football Federation) regulations. The AFE has characterised the Spanish economic system as "obsolete" and called on Spanish bodies to get closer to "the modern and participative systems of the great European leagues".
