"UEFA has filed a motion for the recusal of the judge presiding over the current proceedings (regarding the European Super League project) as it believes there are significant irregularities," announced the European body on 28/09/2021.

The Madrid Commercial Court No. 17 had prohibited UEFA from opposing the Super League project and sanctioning clubs and players who might take part in the competition. Madrid judge Manuel Ruiz de Lara had set a five-day ultimatum, on 19/09/2021, for UEFA to rescind its sanctions against the founding clubs, threatening legal action for "failure to respect the principle of free competition."

"UEFA has always acted in good faith throughout the proceedings pending before a Court in Madrid. Accordingly - and notwithstanding that UEFA does not recognise the jurisdiction of the Court in Madrid and firmly believes that it has always acted in full compliance with the pending proceedings - UEFA has today made formal submissions to the Court in Madrid evidencing its ongoing compliance with the orders," explained UEFA.
