International Match Calendar: "Our ambition is to develop football worldwide" (G. infantino, FIFA)

"FIFA's ambition is to develop football worldwide, but this can only be achieved if more tournaments are held more regularly," said FIFA president Gianni Infantino (ITA/SUI) at the "first FIFA member associations online summit" focused on the international match calendar on 30/09/2021

204 of FIFA's 211 member associations and 32 members of the International Federation's council went online to receive an update and "provide feedback in relation to the future of football" over four hours during the summit.

The consequences of organising the men's and women's World Cups every two years instead of four at present, is the subject of a feasibility study voted for by 166 votes to 22 at the 71^st FIFA Congress on 21/05/2021.

Arsène Wenger (FRA), chief of global football development at FIFA, and Jill Ellis (USA), head of FIFA's technical advisory group for Women's Football, presented proposals for the international match calendar and world youth tournaments. The current men's calendar expires in 2024, while the women's calendar expires in 2023.
