2021-22 Premier League: 14/20 clubs (70%) under foreign ownership following Newcastle's takeover

Newcastle United FC, which was wholly acquired by a consortium of investors led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) on 07/10/2021, is the 14th club in the 2021-22 Premier League to be majority-owned by a foreign owner. This means that 70% of the clubs in the English top flight (14 out of 20) are now owned by capital from outside the UK.

The most represented territory among English club owners is the United States (6 clubs, one of which is co-owned by two investors of different nationalities), followed by China and Italy (two clubs each). This is followed by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Russia and Thailand.

Five clubs are therefore British-owned, in addition to the special case of Everton FC, which is majority owned by Farhad Moshiri, an Iranian-born businessman who later became a British citizen.

This 70% share is the highest among the European Top 5 leagues. In the Serie A TIM (8 out of 20 clubs, 7 of which are North American-owned, see below) and in Ligue 1 Uber Eats (also 8 out of 20 clubs, 8 different countries represented), the proportion is 40%. In Spain…
