Foreign tourists who visited Brazil for the 2014 World Cup (12/06 to 07/13/2014) spent 1.8bn reais (approximately €593m) in June 2014, a 75.93% bump over the same period in 2013, the Brazilian government announced on 25/07/2014. This is the single-month record since the Brazilian central bank began making this calculation in 1948.

If foreign tourists' expenditures in the first 23 days of July 2014 are added in -- estimated at 1.35bn reais (approximately €452m) -- the total spent by foreign tourists from 01/06 to 23/07 is 3.12bn reais (€1.045bn).

"These figures show the importance of tourism in the Brazilian economy. More than 1m visitors came to the World Cup and helped create jobs and increase the visibility of Brazil abroad. (.. .) We hope that Brazil's exposure through the World Cup, with a total of 3.6bn viewers worldwide, will attract more tourists," said Vincent Neto, president of Embratur, the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism, on 25/07/2014.
