Facebook: company rebrands as "Meta", names of the groups various social networks remain unchanged

The Facebook company has changed its name to "Meta", announced Marck Zuckerberg, CEO of the social network, on 28/10/2021. The names of the group's various social networks or instant messaging services (Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, Messenger) as well as that of Oculus (a company specialising in virtual reality) remain unchanged, as do their structures.

The aim of the name change is to highlight the metaverse, a contraction of 'meta' ('beyond' in ancient Greek) and 'universe'. "Right now, our brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can't possibly represent everything that we're doing today, let alone in the future," said Marck Zuckerberg.

The announcement comes in the midst of the "Facebook Files," a massive leak of documents revealing that the US company ignored internal reports and warnings about the damage caused by the social network around the world, particularly on teenagers.
