esports: FC Barcelona launches on League of Legends and joins the Superliga (Spanish esports league)

FC Barcelona (LaLiga Santander) is launching an esports section on the League of Legends (Riot Games) video game and will join the Superliga, the Spanish national league organised by the Liga de Videojuegos Profesional (LVP, owned by the Mediapro group), from 2022, announced the Catalan club on 10/11/2021.

Barça is therefore entering the highest national level on LoL. To do this, the Barcelona club has bought the slot of the Spanish structure S2V Digital Sports and its team S2V Esports, which has been present in the Superliga since 2016, for an estimated amount of between €200,000 and €250,000. Barcelona is said to have beaten a proposal from Sevilla FC (LaLiga Santander) and Case Esports. Barça also has esports teams on eFootball (formerly PES, from Konami), Rocket League (Psyonix, Epic Games) and Hearthstone (Blizzard Entertainment).

"Barça now assumes the entire financial burden of the project. The average budget for a League of Legends team in the Superliga is €300,000," according to the Spanish specialist media 2Playbook on 27/10/2021.
