France: Canal+ considering swapping generalist model for 100% sports or cinema/series offers (press)

The audiovisual group Canal+ France is considering abandoning its generalist pay-TV model in favour of 100% sports on the one side and 100% cinema & series on the other, according to the French daily newspaper Le Figaro on 24/11/2021.

"Vincent Bolloré's group believes that this model, mixing cinema and sport, is now more of a disadvantage than an advantage. Faced with global giants, which position themselves on monolithic offers marketed at a much lower price and essentially dedicated to cinema and series, Canal+ appears less competitive. In addition, Vivendi's subsidiary is furious at being treated differently from certain platforms. Amazon's cinema obligations, for example, should not take into account the turnover linked to the marketing of its Ligue 1 pass," said the daily newspaper.

"Canal+, which finances more than a hundred films a year, is obliged to devote a sum equivalent to 12.5% of its turnover to French cinema. This turnover includes revenue from both cinema and sport.
