ECA: executive board unanimous against FIFA's proposal for a World Cup every two years

The ECA executive board has unanimously opposed FIFA's proposal for a biennial World Cup, according to the European Club Association, which met in Paris (FRA), "to address a critical range of topics relating to the future of professional football, at a time of on-going and significant challenges for the game," on 02/12/2021.

This opposition to the proposed biennial World Cup "represents over 240 professional football clubs of Europe, whose players comprise the vast majority of any FIFA World Cup (with it being noted at almost 90% of players featuring in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia were provided by ECA clubs)," said the Association, chaired by Nasser Al-Khelaïfi (QAT / Paris Saint-Germain).

FIFA's 211 national member associations will meet by video conference on Monday 20/12/2021 "to discuss the future of football after receiving a detailed update on the ongoing consultation process on the topic," announced the world body on 20/10/2021. No vote will be taken at the end of this World Summit.
