2022 Beijing Olympics: after the United States, the UK and Australia announce a "diplomatic boycott"

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has declared a "diplomatic boycott" (athletes will participate, but no politicians will take part) of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics (04-20/02/2022) during the weekly question time in Parliament on 08/12/2021. The Australian government followed suit on the same day.

The UK and Australia thus join the USA, which officially announced a diplomatic boycott on 06/12/2021. "This is something we are considering," said US President Joe Biden on 18/11/2021.

This decision is justified by the "genocide and crimes against humanity underway in Xinjiang," announced the White House. By being present, "US diplomatic or official representation would treat these games as business as usual in the face of the PRC's egregious human rights abuses and atrocities in Xinjiang (against the Uyghurs, a Turkic-speaking and Muslim minority ethnic group), and we simply can't do that," said Jen Psaki, press secretary for the White House.
