Serie A TV rights: TIM to ask for a discount of €60-80m from DAZN as part of their partnership

TIM, a brand belonging to the telecommunications operator Telecom Italia, is to demand a €60-80m discount from the OTT platform DAZN as part of their partnership for the Serie A TIM broadcasting rights in Italy, according to the Italian business daily Il Sole 24 Ore on 08/12/2021.

Telecom Italia would provide 40% of DAZN's expected payments (around €336m per season out of the €840m expected each year over the 2021-2024 cycle) for TIM to be "the reference telephone and pay-TV operator for the DAZN content offering in Italy as well as for the technological partnership."

Telecom Italia is asking for a discount due to the technological issues DAZN faced at the beginning of the season as well as for the fraudulent use related to the fact that the platform allows its subscribers to connect on two devices at the same time (see below). DAZN had 1.9 million subscribers in Italy at the end of September 2021, 400,000 to 500,000 fewer than expected, according to the Italian daily.
