LFP: Ligue 2 with 18 clubs from 2024-25 adopted by the general assembly (78.34% of the votes)

The general assembly of the Ligue de Football Professionnel has adopted by 78.34% a transition to 18 clubs (instead of 20) in Ligue 2 from the 2024-25 season, announced the LFP on 09/12/2021.

"This reform is in line with the first measure adopted by the LFP general assembly on 03/06/2021 which consisted of adopting the move to 18 clubs in Ligue 1 from the 2023-24 season. Following this new structural decision, the change of format in Ligue 2 will be carried out by four relegations and two promotions between Ligue 2 and the National (third division) at the end of the 2023-24 season," explained the French league.

The Collège de Ligue 2 (the LFP body that brings together the presidents of the 20 clubs and is chaired by Christian Leca, president of AC Ajaccio) voted in favour of the transition from 20 to 18 clubs on 15/11/2021. Only four clubs voted against.

"As with Ligue 1, this move to 18 clubs could be brought forward" as clubs in financial difficulty may not be saved from relegation "provided the National format is maintained," added the LFP.
