Tokyo 2020: a total expenditure of €11.3bn, €1.4bn less than the Covid budget (€12.8bn)

The total provisional expenditure for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games is JPY1,453bn (€11.3bn), JPY191bn (€1.4bn) less than what was projected in the fifth version of the Games expenditure budget (V5) (JPY1,644bn, 12.8bn), "due to past efforts to control expenses, including simplification, and a review of contracts for holding the Games without spectators," announced the Japanese organising committee on 22/12/2021.

"The Japanese government, which is responsible for all events after the announcement of the V5, must pay the additional expenses linked to measures to fight the Coronavirus pandemic, and the Tokyo government must pay those linked to security. The Organising Committee expects ticket revenue to fall due to the behind closed-door nature of most of the events at the Tokyo Games. As a result, the revenue budget will decrease by JPY86.7bn (€675m) compared to V5 to reach JPY634.3bn (€4.9bn)," continued the committee.
