Covid/Australian Open: Novak Djokovic given reprieve until 10/01/2022, but may yet be deported

Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic has been granted a reprieve by a Melbourne (AUS) judge from being deported from Australia until a new review of his case scheduled for Monday 10/01/2022, according to Australian media on 06/01/2022. Until then, the Serb will be housed in a quarantine hotel in Melbourne.

The world number 1 in the ATP rankings has appealed against the Australian authorities' decision to cancel his visa to enter the country. He is due to defend his Australian Open Grand Slam title (from 17-30/01/2022), which he has won nine times, and which could be a record 21^st major for the player.

The Serb, who does not wish to communicate his vaccination status, had been granted a medical exemption (five possible cases, including having contracted the virus in the last six months) as he had indicated via his Instagram account on 04/01/2022. This was reportedly revoked after the player failed to provide "appropriate evidence" to enter Australia, according to Australian Health Minister Greg Hunt.
