AS Saint-Etienne: Winamax, online betting operator, cannot appear on club's shirt in Turkey

"ASSE was told late by UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) that they could not wear, Thursday (on 21/08/2014, kick-off at 19:00 CET) for the 2014-15 Europa League play-off first leg against Karabükspor (Turkey), the shirts on which appear the Winamax logo, their main sponsor (French online betting operator)", announced AS Saint-Etienne on 21/08/2014.

The decision was caused by the Turkish law that bans advertising for online betting. According to UEFA rules, it is the national law of the country in which the game is played that prevails in European competitions.

AS Saint-Etienne will play the Europa League play-off first leg in Turkey with no sponsor on the front of their shirt. The charity ASSE Coeur-Vert will, however, "appears at the back of the shirts", indicated the club.

• AS Saint-Etienne will host Karabükspor (TUR) in the Europa League play-off second leg on 28/08/2014 at the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium.
• Advertising for online betting is authorised by the French law since 12/05/2010.
