The Premier League, its clubs and their players, generated a total tax contribution of £3.6bn (€4.3bn) in 2019-20, including £1.4bn (€1.7bn) in direct contributions from players playing in the English league, according to the UK office of the audit and consultancy firm EY (Ernst & Young), in its report entitled "Premier League: Economic and Social Impact" published by the League on 17/01/2022 (document available to download).

In total, the direct and indirect economic impact of the Premier League and its clubs on UK GDP amounted to £7.6bn (€9.1bn) in 2019-20. This contribution represents an increase of 840% over 20 years (since the 1998-99 season). "The Premier League's total economic contribution remains equal to pre-pandemic levels and the amount generated in 2016-17. This is despite an estimated £1.3bn (€1.6bn) loss in broadcast and matchday revenues during seasons 2019-20 and 2020-21 due to Premier League matches being played behind closed doors," explained EY.
