Cameroon 2021: investigations opened after a stampede left 8 dead in front of a stadium in Yaoundé

Cameroon and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) are each opening an investigation after the stampede that left "eight dead (including a child and two women) and 38 injured, seven of them in a serious condition" according to the Cameroonian government, in front of the south entrance of the Olembé Stadium in Yaoundé (CAM) on Monday 24/01/2022.

This tragedy took place just before the Round of 16 TotalEnergies AFCON Cameroon 2021 match between Cameroon and Comoros (2-1).

"Just before the start of the match, there was a stampede at the entrance of the stadium. The victims died of suffocation. The emergency services intervened to resuscitate some people," said a member of the Cameroonian Red Cross to the Turkish news agency Anadolu.

"CAF is currently investigating the situation and trying to get more details on what transpired. We are in constant communication with Cameroon government and the local organizing committee. Tonight, the CAF president Patrice Motsepe sent the general secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba to visit the supporters in hospital in Yaoundé," declared the African…
