England: Liberal Democrats in favour of "safe standing" in stadiums

Liberal Democrats (the third-largest party in the British government) announced on 22/08/2015 that they were in favour of the installation of rail seats in Premier League (English first division) and Football League (English second, third and fourth divisions) . Rail seats can be locked in the up position during home games, allowing fans to stand, or down for European matches in order to meet the regulations of UEFA (Union of European Football Associations), which prohibit standing.

The Lib-Dems put safe standing in their platform for the general election of 07/05/2015. They trail in polls behind the Labour Party and the Conservative Party, and could join a new coalition government in Great Britain in 2015.

John Leech, the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for culture , media and sport, said that "safe standing offers supporters more choice, a better atmosphere and cheaper tickets".

Several Premier League clubs support a trial period for rail seating in their stadiums, including: Manchester United, Aston Villa, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Sunderland and Swansea City. Proponents say that…
