Nigeria: Christopher Giwa elected federation president; validity of election challenged

Christopher Giwa (NGA) was elected president of the NFF (Nigeria Football Federation) at the federation's congress on 26/08/2014. Giwa, the president of Giwa FC (Nigerian first division), got 27 of the 29 votes, beating out Mike Umeh, the outgoing vice-president.

The election's validity, however, has been challenged by some members of the NFF, who have demanded a new vote at a convention they wish to organise on 04/09/2014. Aminu Maigari, the outgoing president of the NFF, was imprisoned by the Nigerian government the morning of the vote and released the next day (27/08/2014).

"We are monitoring the situation in Nigeria; we can not comment further at this time," FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) told News Tank on 28/08/2014.

Maigari had already been dismissed from his role by the executive committee of the Federation on 25/07/2014. At the request of FIFA, he was then reinstated. The international body had requested that "Aminu Maigari preside over the Nigerian Federation's congress on 26/08/2014".
