UEFA: "Financial fair play symbolises the limits of self-regulation" (Yves Leterme, ex-CFCB)

"Of the two objectives of financial fair play, one is in the public interest: to clean up the clubs' finances. Michel Platini (then president of UEFA) had the guts to impose this, and it worked well. On the other hand, there is a systemic problem with state sponsors and financial doping. It's not easy for UEFA to regulate this independently. Financial fair play symbolises the limits of self-regulation. Perhaps it is time to strengthen its independence," said former Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme, chief investigator of the Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) from 2015 to 2021, to the French newspaper the Journal du Dimanche, on 20/02/2022.

"Self-regulation means that the stakeholders in European football are themselves responsible for supervising the work of the (investigation and) judgement chambers. And here, even Mr Aleksander Ceferin (UEFA president) is increasingly dependent on the big clubs. After discussions with the European Commission, the football community should stabilise the rules and hand over their application to an external body. A sort of CSA, a competition…
