Brazil: Flamengo (Rio de Janeiro), most popular club in the country, ahead of three Sao Paulo teams

Flamengo (Brazilian Serie A) is the most popular club in Brazil with 32.5m fans in 2014, according to a study by Ibope (Brazilian Institute of Public Opinion and Statistics) in collaboration with the newspaper Lance!, on 27/08/2014. 7,005 people participated in the survey.

According to the survey, the winner of the 2013 Brazilian Cup is supported by 16.2% of the Brazilian population, which has 201m inhabitants. The Rio de Janeiro club is ahead of the three Sao Paulo teams: Corinthians (27.3m), Sao Paulo FC (13.6m) and Palmeiras (10.6m).

Corinthians is the preferred club of the wealthy classes. 17.6% of individuals that make more than 10 times the minimum salary (€224 in 2014) support this club in Sao Paulo. In comparison, only 10.6% of them support Flamengo. The red and black club is support by 20.8% of people that make less than the minimum salary, compared to 10% for Corinthians.

Fluminense, which is historically the club of the wealthy classes of Rio, is the 11th club in terms of popularity with 3.6m fans. According to this study, 22.3% of the club's fans have a degree in higher…
