Spain: RTVE acquires TV rights to the 2022 World Cup from Mediapro for €35m (press)

The Spanish public broadcasting group RTVE has acquired the Spanish broadcasting rights to the 2022 World Cup (to be held in Qatar) from the Spanish broadcasting group Mediapro for a sum of €35m, according to several Spanish media on 25/02/2022.

Mediapro was hoping to recover a sum of €50m for these rights, according t Spanish media. The group headed by Jaume Roures had acquired the broadcasting rights to the 2022 World Cup from FIFA at the same time as those for the 2019 Women's World Cup, on 18/01/2019.

The last three editions of the men's World Cup (2010, 2014, 2018) were broadcast in Spain by the private free-TV group Mediaset España.

  • RTVE announced that it has acquired the free-to-air rights to broadcast the 2021-22 Champions League final on 14/02/2022.
  • RTVE broadcast the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics (free-to-air rights) for an estimated €60m according to Spanish press.
