International transfers: English clubs have the most negative balance (-€4.3bn) since 2017 (CIES)

With a total deficit of €4.35bn (€6.922bn expenditure/€2.572bn income), English clubs have the most negative international transfer balance since July 2017, according to the CIES Football Observatory's "Weekly Post" published on 14/03/2022.

Italy is in second place among the Top 10 countries with the largest deficit, with a negative balance of €910m (€3.123bn expenditure/€2.213bn income). China, in third place, posted a deficit of €433m (€574m expenditure/€141m income). Two other representatives from the European Top 5 appear in this ranking: Spain, 6^th (-€295m), and Germany, 9^th (-€90m).

Portugal, on the other hand, had the most profitable transfer balance over the period, with a positive balance of €1.147bn (€527m expenditure/€1.674bn income), followed by Brazil (2^nd, €1.021bn) and the Netherlands (3^rd, €742m). At the foot of the podium, France is in 4^th place with €690m in profits from international transfers (€2.41bn expenditure/€3.1bn income).
