War in Ukraine: Andriy Pyatov, Shakhtar Donetsk and national team captain, appeals to Ukrainians

"I would like to appeal to all Ukrainians: every day you prove that you are the strongest and best nation. We must stick together, because only we can help ourselves. We know that we have strong-minded people who will cope and who will be able to overcome everything!" said Ukrainian international goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov, via the website of his club, Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR), on 13/03/2022.

The message, entitled "Glory to the soldiers, our heroes", was reproduced on the website of the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) on 14/03/2022, nineteen days after Russia's invasion of Ukraine led by Vladimir Putin.

"On 24/02/2022, I woke up at 05:00 to the sound of a flying fighter, and my wife woke up just a couple of minutes after the sound of the explosion. She couldn't believe it and was shocked, but I immediately opened the phone, read the news and saw that the war had begun," wrote Andriy Pyatov, 37 years old (born on 28/06/1984).
