War in Ukraine: Court of Arbitration for Sport upholds UEFA's suspension of Russian clubs

The ban on Russian clubs participating in the European Football Cups organised by UEFA has been upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on 15/03/2022.

"FIFA and UEFA have decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice," announced the two bodies on 28/02/2022, the fifth day after the invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin's Russia, which began on 24/02/2022.

The Football Union of Russia (FUR) then appealed against these sanctions.

"The challenged decision remains in force and all Russian teams and clubs continue to be suspended from participation in UEFA competitions," said Corinne Schmidhauser, president of the appeals arbitration division at CAS, in a statement (document available to download). This suspension applies until the Court of Arbitration for Sport takes a final decision on the matter.

CAS has not yet ruled on the FIFA sanction which excludes the Russian team from the play-offs for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar on 24 and 29/03/2022…
