Spain: approval of the statutes for the first women's professional football league

The board of directors of the Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD) has unanimously approved the constitutive statutes for the first women's professional football league in Spain, announced the Supreme Sports Council on 14/03/2022.

This new body, whose creation had been decided on 15/06/2021, will be Spain's third professional league. The other two are men's leagues: LaLiga (football) and Liga Endesa (basketball).

The 16 clubs of the 2021-22 Primera Iberdrola (see list below) had previously reached an agreement on the statutes for this new League, as announced by Spanish media on 09/01/2022. The first professional Spanish women's football championship is expected to be organised in 2022-23.

"These statutes are a significant milestone that crystallises a real project for the country. Today the women's professional football league is finally a reality. Today Spain is settling a debt with women sportswomen who deserved this recognition, it was a question of justice. Football is going to be a driving force for other sports," said José Manuel Franco, Spain's Secretary of State for Sport.
