War in Ukraine: Court of Arbitration for Sport upholds FIFA measures against Russian football

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has refused to suspend FIFA's sanctions against Russian football following the invasion of Ukraine, announced the CAS, based in Lausanne (SUI) on 18/03/2022, on the 23rd day of the war waged in Ukraine by Vladimir Putin's Russia since 24/02/2022.

The Russian Federation (RUF) had requested that the suspension of its teams and clubs from all competitions organised by FIFA be put on hold for the duration of the CAS proceedings. 

"The challenged decision remains in force and all Russian teams and clubs continue to be suspended from participation in FIFA competitions. The CAS arbitration proceedings continue. A panel of arbitrators is currently being constituted and the parties are exchanging written submissions. No hearing has been fixed yet," said the Court. As a result, Russia's chances of participating in the 2022 World Cup play-offs are getting slimmer. The country was due to host Poland on Thursday 24/03/2022 (see below).
