USA: “If we look at a World Cup, we'd be looking to do it ourselves” (S. Gulati, US Soccer)

“If we look at a World Cup in the future, at this point we'd be looking to do it ourselves,” stated Sunil Gulati, the president of USSF (United States Soccer Federation), regarding a possible joint bid between the United States and Canada to host the World Cup, on 04/09/2014.

"The FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) rules are pretty straightforward on this issue at this point, that there's only joint bids allowed in the case of a country that doesn't have sufficient infrastructure or stadiums where you're basically [using a joint bid] out of necessity," said Sunil Gulati. "It'd be pretty hard to argue that the U.S. doesn't have the infrastructure, stadiums or anything else needed to put on a World Cup."

However, the president of US Soccer reiterated that changes need to be made to FIFA's bidding process before the U.S. submits another World Cup bid. "I think we want to host the World Cup at some point in the future. The 2020s sound like a good time, but I've been pretty clear that we want to see some changes made in the process," said Sunil Gulati.
