Human rights/Qatar 2022: ING (bank) will not run a marketing campaign for the KNVB

The Netherlands-based bank ING will not activate its partnership with the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, according to a spokesperson for the banking group who spoke to the Dutch daily newspaper De Telegraaf on 07/04/2022.

"The human rights situation in Qatar is the reason why we will not do anything regarding this tournament," said an ING spokesperson to the Dutch national press. The banking group, which has been the main partner of the KNVB since 1996, extended its partnership until 2028 on 23/03/2022. While ING will not be deploying any activations in the run-up to the competition, its logo will continue to be displayed as a training shirt sponsor of the Oranje. "We are focusing on the Women's Euro 2022 in England," added the spokesperson for the banking group.

Albert Heijn (supermarkets), KPN (telecommunications), the Dutch Lottery and Bitvavo (crypto), four other major partners of the KNVB, are also expected to boycott the World Cup in Qatar, according to De Telegraaf.
