Germany: total revenue of €4.05bn in 2020-21, the lowest since 2016-17 (DFL)

"Compared with the last pre-pandemic season, 2018-19, the annual total revenue of the two leagues (Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga) has fallen by more than €750m: from €4.8bn to €4.05bn. The last time the revenue of the Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga was lower was in the 2016-17 season (€4.01bn)," states Donata Hopfen, speaker for the executive committee of DFL e.V. and CEO of DFL GmbH, in the forward of the DFL's 2022 Economic Report, which highlights the "key economic indicators for the Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga for the 2020-21 season."

The overall decrease in revenue after the first two Covid-19-impacted seasons (2019-20 and 2020-21) exceeds €1bn: -€274m for 2019-20 and -€752m for 2020-21, or -€1.026bn in total.

"As most matches in the 2020-21 season were played behind closed doors in line with the relevant policy requirements, match revenue alone - which mainly comprises ticket sales - fell by 95% compared with the 2018-19 season. Having amounted to €650m in the last full season  before the pandemic, match revenue came in at just €35.5m in the 2020-21 season," explained the German…
