Scotland: SPFL clubs vote to use VAR in the cinch Premiership from 2022-23

"SPFL clubs have voted at their general meeting today to approve the introduction of VAR technology at cinch Premiership matches next season," announced the Scottish Professional Football League on 19/04/2022.

Following the approval of 41 of the 42 clubs participating in the top four Scottish football divisions (cinch Premiership, cinch Championship, cinch League 1 and cinch League 2), VAR technology is due to be installed at each Premiership ground and is expected to be launched after the 2022 World Cup.

"Total costs for the introduction of VAR in the cinch Premiership are anticipated to be around £1.2m per season, following an independent financial review of the costs and a benchmarking exercise carried out by the European Leagues. The general meeting also approved a resolution that payment for the cost of introducing and running the VAR system would be met by Premiership clubs in the same proportions as the current formula which makes fee payments in line with end-of-season league positions (see below).
