2026 World Cup: FIFA accepts Vancouver's (CAN) candidacy as a host city

"Following the submission of documentation by the Province of British Columbia/City of Vancouver (CAN) in order to join the candidate host city process (with BC Place as the proposed stadium), as well as a recent inspection visit by a FIFA delegation, world football's governing body has agreed to accept the city's candidacy for the FIFA World Cup 2026," announced the international federation on 14/04/2022.

In 2018, the province of British Columbia (western Canada) withdrew from the host city selection process, citing concerns about organisational costs. Vancouver's new bid replaces that of Montreal (province of Quebec), which also withdrew for financial reasons in July 2021.

The FIFA Congress awarded the hosting of the 2026 World Cup to three Federations from the Concacaf zone (USA - Mexico - Canada), in Moscow (RUS) on 14/06/2018. This will be the first edition with 48 teams (compared to 32 from 1998 to 2022) with 80 matches on the programme (compared to 64 in the seven previous editions).
