War in Ukraine/Wimbledon 2022: Russians and Belarusians excluded against advice from the ATP and WTA

"In the circumstances of such unjustified and unprecedented military aggression (by Russia on Ukraine since 24/02/2022), it would be unacceptable for the Russian regime to derive any benefits from the involvement of Russian or Belarusian players with The Championships. It is therefore our intention, with deep regret, to decline entries from Russian and Belarusian players to The Championships 2022 (scheduled from 27/06 to 10/07/2022)," announced the All England Lawn Tennis Club, organiser of the English Grand Slam tournament, on 20/04/2022.

The body is therefore depriving the current Russian world number 2 Daniil Medvedev and the Belarusian world number 4 Aryna Sabalenka of a place in the tournament, while Nigel Huddleston, the British Minister for Sport, had asked at the end of March 2022 that any Russian or Belarusian athlete wishing to participate in events in the United Kingdom prove that he or she is "genuinely independent and neutral" and that this should be supported by a written declaration.
