Twitter: Real Madrid overtake FC Barcelona and are most followed sports club in the world

The Twitter account of Real Madrid CF (Liga BBVA) has surpassed the number of followers of FC Barcelona and become the most followed sports club in the world on 10/09/2014. The club now has 12.64m fans on its main Twitter account, or 551,000 additional followers compared to August 2014.

With 333,000 additional followers, Barça now have 12.56m fans on its main Twitter account. Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona are the only clubs to reach 12.5m followers on Twitter.

In the Premier League, Manchester United (3.31m followers) and Liverpool (3.13m) both surpassed the 3m Twitter followers in September 2014. With 418,000 additional followers in August (+13%), Manchester United registered the strongest growth in the European Top 20.

In Ligue 1, Paris Saint-Germain surpassed 1.5m followers with 104,000 additional fans. The Parisian club is the 10^th most followed European club on Twitter. AC Milan, 2,193,244 followers, and FC Bayern Munich, 1,477,694 followers, lead the Serie A and the Bundesliga, respectively.
