Chelsea FC: group of investors led by Todd Boehly (USA) acquires the club for £2.5bn

"Chelsea FC (Premier League) can confirm that terms have been agreed for a new ownership group, led by Todd Boehly (USA), Clearlake Capital (US investment fund based in California, $72bn in assets under management), Mark Walter (USA) and Hansjoerg Wyss (SUI), to acquire the club," announced the English club on 07/05/2022.

Chelsea FC was officially put up for sale by its owner Roman Abramovich (RUS) on 02/03/2022, a few days after the start of the war in Ukraine triggered by Vladimir Putin's Russia, which resulted in a series of sanctions imposed by the British government on the oligarch and his assets, including the London club, which he had owned since 2003 (see "further reading" section).

The deal is worth £2.5bn (€2.92bn), a sum that "will be deposited into a frozen UK bank account with the intention to donate 100% to charitable causes as confirmed by Roman Abramovich. UK Government approval will be required for the proceeds to be transferred from the frozen UK bank account," added Chelsea FC.
