Chelsea FC: Premier League & UK Government approve Todd Boehly/Clearlake consortium takeover

"Last night (24/05/2022) the Government issued a licence that permits the sale of Chelsea FC. Given the sanctions we placed on those linked to Putin and the bloody invasion of Ukraine, the long-term future of the club can only be secured under a new owner. We are satisfied the proceeds of the sale will not benefit Roman Abramovich or other sanctioned individuals," said Nadine Dorries, Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport via Twitter on 25/05/2022.

Chelsea FC had previously confirmed that terms had been agreed "for a new ownership group, led by Todd Boehly (USA), Clearlake Capital (US investment fund based in California, $72bn in assets under management), Mark Walter (USA) and Hansjoerg Wyss (SUI), to acquire the club," on 07/05/2022. However, for the sale to be finalised, both the approval of the British government and the Premier League was necessary.
