European Top 5 attendance: an average of 24,952 spectators per match & fill rate of 65.1% in 2021-22

The 98 clubs that competed in the European Top 5 leagues during the 2021-22 season posted an average attendance of 24,952 spectators per match, down 20.1% from 2018-19 (31,224 per match), the last year to be played in its entirety without any stadium capacity limits. The average stadium fill rate reached 65.1% in 2021-22, compared to 80% in 2018-19.

A lack of restrictions implemented by the British authorities on the number of fans at sports venues in England meant that the Premier League posted an average attendance of 39,989 spectators per game, well ahead of their rivals, including the Bundesliga (21,038), which usually outperforms the English league, but which was subject to capacity limits for most of the season.

The German league averaged fewer spectators than LaLiga Santander (22,979), which was also affected by government measures, albeit to a lesser extent, and the Ligue 1 Uber Eats (21,593), which was relatively unaffected by the health crisis in 2021-22 in terms of stadium capacity.
