Portugal: Fernando Santos named national team manager; still must serve eight game ban

Fernando Santos (POR) was named manager of the Portuguese national team, the FPF (the Portuguese Football Federation) announced on 23/09/2014. He will replace Paulo Bento (POR) who left his post as manager of the national team in "mutual agreement" with the federation on 11/09/2014.

Fernando Santos, 59 years old, was the manager of Greece from 2010 to 2014. He led the Greek national team to the Round of 16 in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil (from 12/06 to 13/07/2014), where it was eliminated by Costa Rica (1-1, 3-5 pen) on 29/06/2014. Fernando Santos was sent off during this fixture. FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) suspended him for eight games (which the Portuguese has not yet served) for "several acts of unsporting conduct towards the match officials," on 04/08/2014.

Fernando Santos has appealed the decision. The FIFA Appeal Committee should meet to reconsider the case in the next 15 days (between 23/09 and 07/10/2014), according to several Portuguese media outlets.
