"We are always looking for ways we can improve VAR and make it more accessible to many countries. We are also testing VAR Light, a version with less cameras, less sophisticated, that has proven very successful. We tested it in the last FIFA Futsal World Cup (from 12/09 to 03/10/2021) for instance," said Gianni Infantino (ITA/SUI), president of FIFA, during the 136th annual general assembly of the IFAB in Doha (QAT) on 13/06/2022.

In addition to making the five substitutions per match rule permanent (instead of three) and increasing the maximum number of substitutes on the bench from 12 to 15 players from 01/07/2022 (see below), the International Football Association Board also outlined the various trials underway, including those aimed at improving the quality of refereeing in particular.
