Germany/DFB: 2.21 million licensed players in 2021-22, the most since 2017-18

2.21 million players played football in Germany during the 2021-22 season (as of 30/05/2022) in organised matches, an increase of 21.5% on the previous season and the most since 2017-18, according to the DFB on 20/06/2022.

"There were 2.02 million active boys and men, compared to just under 187,000 female players, of which more than 103,000 were aged 16 and under. Their share increased by 31% and is thus again at a similar level as in the 2018/19 season (i.e. before the health crisis and the interruptions of matches linked to the Covid-19 pandemic). Among the boys, the number of players up to 14 years of age increased by 22% to just under 905,000," explained the German Football Federation.

"In total, more than 346,000 people were registered as players for the first time in the German Football Association's regional associations in the past season (2021-22). After the slump during the pandemic, the number more than doubled compared to the previous year (2020-21)," added the DFB, which displays its statistics and their evolution in a dedicated page on its website.
