A play-off match on a neutral ground will be organised to award the Italian championship title (with a possible penalty shoot-out, without extra time) in the event of a tie between two teams at the end of the Serie A TIM season, as decided by the FIGC during its federal council meeting on 28/06/2022.

Tied teams will therefore no longer be decided on the basis of the results of head-to-head matches or goal difference. These criteria will instead be used to determine the top two teams, if necessary, if more than two clubs finish on equal points.

The rule previously existed until 2006, but this "Championship final" took place only once, between FC Inter Milan and Bologna FC 1909, with Bologna winning 2-0 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome (ITA) on 07/06/1964.

The federal council also approved the amendments that make the rule of five substitutions (and even six in matches with extra time) definitive, in accordance with the IFAB's decision on 13/06/2022, which made this measure, initially adopted in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, permanent.
