Bundesliga: Bremen senate votes for legislation for the league to help pay for police costs

The regional senate of Bremen (GER) adopted, at the first reading, legislation for the DFL (German Professional Football League) to support police costs incurred during "at risk" matches, on 25/09/2014. The second reading vote is expected on 22 or 23/10/2014.

To date, costs incurred by police at Weser-Stadion (capacity 43,500), the stadium in which Werder Bremen (Bundesliga) play, are borne by the municipality and the region of Bremen. An internal report of the regional senate estimate these costs were €2m in 2012-13 and €1.4m in 2013-14.

Police costs are estimated at €250,000, on average, for each "at risk" match. "Ultimately, it is only a few games a season where 1,200 police officers are mobilised, instead of the 200 normally. Thus, a moderate and adequate participation of the DFL toward costs incurred is justified," said Ulrich Mäurer, Senator and Minister of the Interior and Sport for Bremen on 25/09/2014.
