esports: Team Heretics (ESP) acquires Misfits Gaming's spot in the LoL European Championship (LEC)

The Spanish esports organisation Team Heretics has acquired the place of the American team Misfits Gaming in the League of Legends European Championship (LEC), announced the two teams and LoL Esports, Riot Games' entity that manages the marketing of its European esports circuit, on 27/07/2022.

Misfits Gaming Group (MGG) will therefore withdraw its teams from the LEC as well as the French League (LFL, via Misfits Premier) after the 2022 season. From January 2023, the European competition will therefore have two Spanish teams, including the 2021 European champions Mad Lions.

The sale is estimated at between $34m and $36m (€33m and €35m), compared with the initial sale price of $45m (€44m), according to specialised media Blix.gg the same day. The difference is said to be due to the fact that Team Heretics would actually own "around 80%" of the MGG slot and would not have full ownership of the LEC slot as Misfits Gaming would retain a 20% stake. "The transaction will go into effect for the 2023 season with MGG remaining a minority partner in the team," confirmed the US structure.
