"The additional police costs must be paid by the clubs, not the taxpayers," said Matteo Renzi, the prime minister of Italy, on 01/10/2014, prior to consideration by the parliament of a draft law on violence in stadiums.

The text provides these additional costs for safety and security outside the stadium will be funded through a tax on the price of tickets (1 to 3%), while the amendments propose a tax on the turnover of the clubs or on audiovisual rights.

  • "One would have to carefully analyze the contributions provided to the State by the clubs, either directly or through games and sports betting," said Carlo Tavecchio, president of the FIGC (Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio, the Italian Football Federation).
