"FC Barcelona and Espanyol can not play in the Liga BBVA if Catalonia becomes independent," said Javier Tebas, president of the LFP (Spanish Professional Football League) on 07/10/2014.

"The Law on Sport states that only a single non-Spanish State can play in La Liga or in Spanish official competitions, and that is Andorra," said Javier Tebas.

Catalonia had planned to hold a referendum for independence on 09/11/2014, but the election was suspended by the Spanish Constitutional Court on 29/09/2014.
