Transfers: €6.2bn spent by European Top 5 clubs in 2022, +61% compared to 2021

"Big-5 league clubs' transfer market investments have risen sharply in 2022: +61% compared to the previous year. The level of transfer fee expenditure observed in 2022 is the second highest over the ten-year period analysed: €6.2bn (just about -7% with respect to the record high of 2019)," according to the CIES Football Observatory's monthly report, a financial analysis of transfers "from or to teams" in the European Top 5 (Premier League, LaLiga Santander, Bundesliga, Serie A TIM and Ligue 1 Uber Eats), published on 02/09/2022.

The increase concerns the winter transfer window (+190%), as well as the summer transfer window (+49%).

"A noticeable increase compared to 2021 was recorded in the English Premier League: +€1.3bn to exceed the €3bn mark. This is an all-time record!" said the CIES.

The share of investment by Premier League clubs within the Top 5 also reached a new record: "48.5% compared to 38.7% during the whole ten-year (2013-2022) period studied," added the International Centre for Sports Studies.
